Spring Gardening for Small Pets: Easy & Safe Foods to Grow

Written by Serita Russell | Feb 26, 2025 12:49:12 PM

I think everyone can agree that it is the best time of the year, the end of winter is finally in sight, there is hope we will have a spring. So as the days are getting longer and the weather is warming up, it won’t be long before the piggies and the bunnies can go out, but also it is the perfect time to start planning and prepping what you are going to grow in your garden … more importantly what you are going to grow for the fur babies.

Not only does home growing your pets veg and salads ensure the highest quality, but it’s also a fun and relaxing thing to do, especially for the piggies. (Mine always get excited for the daily freshly grown veg & salad & plants drop!!)

Whether you have a massive garden, a farm, or just a few pots on the windowsill, here’s a short little guide on how to grow safe, easy plants that your piggies and bunnies will love.

Why Grow Your Own?

Store bought veggies are great, and they get us through the winter, but growing your own is always better, not just for your wallet, but also for your pet’s tummy ...

  • No pesticides or harmful chemicals
  • Always fresh and organic
  • More variety in your pets' diet (because let's face it, we aren’t going to buy a whole garden's worth of variety from Aldi)
  • A relaxing, cost-effective way to give your piggies some fresh treats

Easy & Safe Plants for Your Fur Babies

🌱Herbs - perfect for all small spaces!

They are simple to grow, and packed with goodness. But as with many treats and food, these are all best fed in moderation, maybe a couple of times a week. Some favourite include:

  • Parsley, a vitamin C boost, but keep in mind that this should be fed in moderation (especially for rabbits and guinea pig due to calcium content)
  • Coriander, great for digestion and a favourite of many fur babies
  • Basil, a fragrant treat, also one best in small amounts
  • Dill, loved by all!

🛑Avoid: Chives, onions, and garlic, as these are toxic to small pets

🥬Leafy Greens

Known for growing quickly, and packed with essential nutrients.

  • Romaine Lettuce, a great staple, but avoid iceberg lettuce
  • Kale, high in vitamin C, but should be fed in moderation
  • Spinach, another vitamin-rich option, best given occasionally
  • Dandelion Greens, free, easy to find, and full of nutrients (make sure they haven’t been sprayed with pesticides and chemicals though)

🌼Edible Flowers

Who doesn't love flowers?? They not only look beautiful but also provide enrichment for your pets.

  • Marigolds, Anti-inflammatory and safe in small amounts
  • Nasturtiums, packed with vitamin C and totally safe for all 3 different types of pets
  • Chamomile, gentle soothing herb that can help with digestion and anxiety in pets

🥕Veggies To Grow

For those with a slightly bigger growing space, here are a couple of easy, pet-safe veggies to grow.

  • Carrots & Carrot Tops, all 3 LOVE these!! (it is advised to feed in moderation due to the high sugar content)
  • Peppers (bell peppers only!), a fantastic vitamin C source, perfect for guinea pigs and rabbits
  • Courgette, low in sugar and great for hydration
  • Cucumber, a refreshing, water-rich treat for warmer days

🍓Berries, A Safe and Sweet Treat

These can be a delicious, occasional treat for guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters. They are easy to grow and packed with vitamins! Here are a couple …

  • Strawberries, high in vitamin C, best in small amounts due to the natural sugar
  • Raspberries, good source of fiber and antioxidants
  • Blueberries, a great, low-calorie treat, rich in antioxidants
  • Blackberries, advised to feed sparingly due to natural sugars

🛑Feeding Tips:

  • Moderation is key! Berries are high in sugar, so they should only be given as an occasional treat.
  • Wash thoroughly to remove any dirt or bugs.
  • Serve fresh or frozen (thawed), but avoid dried sugared berries as they can be high in sugar.

🌾Grasses & Hay Friendly Plants (Best for Rabbits and Guinea Pigs)

  • Timothy Grass, essential for rabbits and guinea pigs, helping with digestion and dental health
  • Wheatgrass, can be grown indoors and is a fun treat for all three pets (guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters)

Growing Tips for a Small Pet-Friendly Garden

🌞Choose a sunny spot - most of these plants thrive in good sunlight.

💦Water regularly, keep plants hydrated, especially in warmer months.

🌱Use safe soil, avoid chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

🪴Grown in pots if space is limited, many herbs, greens, and berries do well in containers!

Conclusion

Growing food for your guinea pigs, hamsters, and rabbits is a simple way of making sure they are getting healthy, fresh treats while also enjoying the beauty of spring gardening. Whether you only have the space for a few pots, or a garden full, your little fur babies will be thanking you!
